01Solar panels and Bitcoin - the perfect savings combination.
Traditionally, people install solar panels to cover as much of their own consumption as possible, rather than to generate a surplus- That is beginning to change now that electricity has become much more expensive and selling it can be more profitable.
Batteries?
More people are trying to maximize their surplus as electricity producers, with the goal of selling as much as possible.
The challenge with this strategy, whether you are a private individual or a solar power producer, is that the market usually pays the least for your electricity in the middle of the day, when you have the most surplus, because demand is low.
This is where batteries come in: they let you store part of the surplus and sell it later in the day or evening, when the price is highest. In theory, this is a good arbitrage strategy, but in practice it takes a huge number of battery cycles before it becomes profitable compared with the cost of the batteries.
Can Bitcoin solve this?
Bitcoin is like a battery that never becomes fully charged.
There are two ways Bitcoin can solve this, both of which are part of Wattoshi:
1. Save surplus income in Bitcoin continuously.
Income from your surplus otherwise disappears into a lower electricity bill. Use and preserve that income through Bitcoin savings.
Instead of passively receiving only a lower electricity bill, you invest the gains from your solar installation along the way in something that can grow over time - like a battery that never becomes full.
2. Use a miner as a price floor and source of heat.
Use a Bitcoin miner when market demand is low and the price you receive for your surplus is lower than the value you get from running the electricity through a miner. This is called "Valley filling" and reduces the risk of low spot prices while giving you a higher return on what you produce. In addition, the miner can provide heat like a space heater and replace other heating solutions.
02The strategy is simple:
- You use what you need yourself; the surplus is exported to the grid.
- Wattoshi tracks the value and converts the selected share into Bitcoin.
- Include a miner to increase the value of your electricity when the spot price is low, while also providing heat.
